Sharing What I’ve Discovered About Teaching While White

I’m grateful for the opportunity to be presenting at this year’s Truss Leadership Conference: Dismantling White Supremacy Culture in Schools. Not only am I passionate about the subject, I firmly believe that the way to break down the barriers created by racism is to give teachers and administrators the tools to engage with racial topics, especially across racial differences. So often we understand that race matters but we feel uncomfortable or ill-equipped to discuss it.

This year’s theme is “Creating Conscious Curriculum,” so I’ll be sharing strategies for shifting teaching practices towards greater equity. We’ll also talk about how to help white students develop antiracist skills so they know how to interrupt and challenge racial bias. And we’ll share our research on white teacher expectations and how white teachers often give different feedback to white students than to students of color — and what we can do about it.

DWSC 2023 is two days full of best practices from presenters who walk the talk, information about new and proven resources, and real opportunities to improve your curriculum. Best of all it’s virtual so travel and accommodations won’t be a barrier for you or your team. If your organization has begun the hard work of assessing for equity, this conference will provide the energy needed to continue that good work. And even if you or your organization are at the starting line, this conference is for you.
